Email Management
How to effectively manage the deadliest time sucker there is, your email!
First, discuss notifications – proactive vs reactive work. Email by default is a reactive thing, messages are coming in that you will react to, which means it will control your time. You are not able to focus on proactive things. Market, sales, follow up etc.
Email notifications take up brain space, you are most often in a position that you cant respond to an email. Say you get an email that takes a lengthy time to respond to or think about, say sitting in this meeting.
If I don’t check my email at the beginning of the day, then I am able to spend the morning pursuing my own agenda rather than reacting to everybody else’s agenda. That’s a huge win because I’m not wasting mental energy thinking about all the messages in my inbox. I realize that waiting until the afternoon isn’t feasible for many people, but I’d like to offer a challenge. Can you wait until 10 AM? What about 9 AM? 8:30 AM? Don’t get wrapped up in the exact time frame. The point of this strategy is to allow yourself some time during your morning when you can work on what is most important to you without letting the rest of the world dictate your mental state.
